    He wrote antisemitic newspaper articles claiming that the Slovaks were 'enslaved by Jews.'
    He established a fascist government in Slovakia.
    He accepted German SS 'advisers' on 'the Jewish question.'
    His government banned Jews from owning real estate, holding public office, attending universities or participating in sporting events and required Jews to wear the Star of David in public.
    He deported over 50,000 Jews to their deaths in concentration camps.
    After an unsuccessful rebellion against his regime, the German army occupied Slovakia, leaving him as a figurehead (August, 1944).
    He served on the front lines as a chaplain in WWI.
    He initially resisted selling out Czechoslovakia to Germany.
    He agreed to declare Slovak independence 'under German protection' after Hitler threatened that otherwise Hungary would be allowed to annex all of Slovakia.
    He stopped the deportation of Jews in the wake of protests from the Vatican (1943).
    His execution was bungled, resulting in his slowly strangling to death.
