The Resume

    (October 9, 1949-May 14, 2017)
    Born in Worcester, Massachusetts
    American League umpire (1977-91)
Umpired three AL Championship Series (1980,1982,1989), one World Series (1983) and one All-Star Game (1986)
Provided the umpire’s voice for the Super NES game ‘Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball’ (1994)
Named Major League supervisor of umpires (2000)

Why he might be annoying:

Even after he reached the majors, his mother would ask when he was going to get a real job.
Unlike most plate umps, he refused to use an indicator – a hand-held clicker used to track strikes, balls and outs.
He had a running feud with manager Earl Weaver, who he usually refused to refer to by name, instead calling him ‘that little….’

Why he might not be annoying:

He rose from the minor leagues to the majors in an incredibly rapid five years.
’Sporting News’ ranked his performance #1 among AL umpires (1991).
While coming to the aid of a mugging victim outside a restaurant in Dallas, he was shot in the back and suffered spinal damage (July 7, 1991).
Doctors initially told him he would probably never walk again, but after three months of therapy, he was able to walk with leg braces and a crutch and throw the ceremonial first pitch of the 1991 World Series.
