Why he might be annoying
He was married three times.
His Broadway performance as Othello was a fiasco.
Even though he was Canadian, he played the title role in D.W. Griffith's film 'Abraham Lincoln.'
Nepotism got him his Academy Award winning role in his son John's film 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.'
He made an uncredited cameo in the first film his son directed as a good luck gesture, and John kidded him by making him do dozens of takes.
When he got home from shooting that day, he got a call from the studio asking him to come in for more takes.
Why he might not be annoying
Eugene O'Neill considered his work in 'Desire Under the Elms' to be the greatest performance in any of the Broadway productions of his plays.
His recording of 'September Song' from the Broadway musical 'Knickerbocker Holiday' was a best seller.
His son John won two Oscars the same night that he won his Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
His son and his granddaughter are Academy Award winners.
