Advocate

The Resume

    (1946-1990)
Born in New York, New York
    Advocate for homeless people
Founded Community for Creative Non Violence
Biography - TV movie 'Samaritan: The Mitch Snyder Story' starring Martin Sheen
Committed suicide at age 44 (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a thief; he served time for breaking into parking meters as a teenager and for stealing cars as an adult.
He was a liar; he admitted to making up a claimed three million homeless in America so the media would have a number to use. He also once famously claimed 45 homeless die every second in the United States which adds up to 1.4 billion per year!
He was a hypocrite; he abandoned his wife and two children. Between 1973 and 1985, he neither contacted them nor provided them with financial support. They did not even know he was alive until they saw him in an interview on '60 Minutes.'
He disrupted Masses at a Catholic church that he thought was spending too much money on a restoration project.
He disavowed the personal responsibility of the homeless to help themselves, instead blaming the 'system' and rejected the proven fact that many of the homeless are suffering from mental illness and/or substance abuse problems.
He tried to keep the homeless from cooperating with the 1990 census, claiming they would be undercounted. Which they were because they didn't cooperate with the census!
He was disliked by some co-workers due to his authoritarian style and tactics, such as not cooperating with the census.

Why he might not be annoying:

He unquestionably did more than any one person in the history of the United States to bring the plight of the homeless to the forefront of public consciousness.
His own father abandoned his family when Snyder was nine.
He began his homeless advocacy due to the influence of Catholic priests Daniel and Phillip Berrigan.
    He rejected violence.
He lived in the shelters he ran.
He was repeatedly arrested for his peaceful protests, he once left an arraignment for trespassing at the White House and went straight back to the White Hose to be arrested again!
