Known for many songs such as ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ and ‘Don’t Smoke In Bed’

Why she might be annoying:

She had a husky, low voice that was not feminine.
She surprisingly disliked her ‘High Priestess of Soul’ title.
She accused critics of being racist when they labeled her as a soul artist.
She married a man who later defrauded her.

Why she might not be annoying:

She set herself from other female jazz vocalists by playing the piano.
She was known as an activist and a leader in her part of the civil rights movement.
The shooting of Medgar Evers and the deaths of four young girls in a Birmingham church bombing in 1963 led to writing the protest song ‘Mississippi Goddamn.’
She was a Juilliard graduate.
Her autobiography was quick to be published in English, French, German and Dutch.
She preferred to be labeled simply as a musician.
Due to her race, she was denied entry to the Curtis Institute of Music College.
