The Resume

    (August 29, 1891-October 29, 1982)
    Born in David City, Nebraska
Birth name was Joyce Clyde Hall
With his older brothers William and Rollie, founded Hallmark Cards (1910)

Why he might be annoying:

    He hated his first name.
He dropped out of high school.
He insisted on personally approving every greeting card design before it went into production.
He and his company commercialized the heck out of holidays like Mothers Day.

Why he might not be annoying:

He began selling postcards door-to-door at age eight to help support his family after his father died.
After the store he and his brothers operated burned down (1915), he got a loan, bought an engraving business, and began making cards of his own design.
His company was one of the first to license Walt Disney characters, using the Three Little Pigs on a 1933 greeting card. (Possibly helping to seal the deal: Walt had been an elementary school classmate of Hall’s wife Elizabeth.)
He was married to Elizabeth Didlay for 54 years until her death.
At the time of his death, Hallmark was producing eight million cards a day and had annual sales over $750 million.
