Why he might be annoying:

He pretended to have no interest in politics while serving as Florence's de facto ruler.
He used his wealth to control the voting in Florence.
He had a son out of wedlock with a slave.
He was succeeded by his son, 'Piero the Gouty.'

Why he might not be annoying:

When his political enemies forced him into exile, his absence was so devastating to Florence's finances that the ban was lifted within a year (1433-34).
He tried to maintain peace in northern Italy by promoting a balance of power between Florence, Naples, Venice and Milan.
He was a patron of the arts, financing Donatello, Fra Lippo Lippi, Fra Angelico and Filippo Brunelleschi.
At his death, the Signoria of Florence gave him the title Pater Patriae, 'Father of His Country.'
