Gretchen yelled, whined, and screeching excessively. Best representing that is the 'We have a bad elephant!' incident in India.
Because the name 'Meredith' is primarily female, it added some confusion over who was Meredith.
Gretchen occasionally did things that hurt her team more than helped (like getting on top of the wooden elephant in India, adding extra weight).

Gretchen fell in a cave in Africa, getting a cut on the head (she needed one stitch).
They survived a non-elimination leg, but had all their possessions taken away a few hours after Gretchen fell in the cave.
Meredith broke three toes during the race. He didn't tell production staff because he was afraid that they'd make him quit.
They were the oldest people ever to compete on the 'Amazing Race.' This lead home voters to select them to be the first team to lose, yet they came in 4th.
They endured taunts on the race from other racers (namely Ray Housteau) about their age.
Gretchen made lots of witty comments on the race. Her quotes led to five episode titles.
