Why he might be annoying:

His career almost ended before he reached the Major Leagues when he developed bone spurs.
He twice led the league in errors by a first baseman (1938-39).
He missed getting a fifth home run title by one homer after breaking his toe late in the season (1946).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was a left-handed batter.
When he was fifteen and a high school sophomore, he played on the varsity baseball team of Piedmont College (which did not belong to an athletic conference and thus had no rules restricting player eligibility) and hit better than .400 for two seasons.
He lost three prime playing seasons to serve in the Navy during World War II.
He was the only player to hit for more than fifty home runs (51) while striking out fewer than fifty times (42) in a season (1947).
He donated his autograph fees from baseball card shows to his hometown Boy Scout troop.
