The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

His original name was 'Big Boy' even though he was a little dog.
He was used by FDR as a political tool.
The press covered his antics extensively.
He is featured near a vampire-like FDR on the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.
He was considered so cute that the White House staff would feed him food that he wasn't supposed to have, making him puke.
He had a special sleeping chair at the foot of FDR's bed.
He received thousands of letters from people, how the hell was he going to respond?
A movie was made about his life at the White House (1942).

Why he might not be annoying:

Some of his mail was from other dogs, somehow.
Like most dogs, he was obedient to his owner.
He could sit, rollover and jump.
He was an honorary private in the US Army for his contributions to the war effort.
It was said that he never fully recovered after the death of FDR.
Republicans, in a moment of insanity, accused FDR of abusing Fala by leaving him on an island and then sending a U.S. Navy destroyer to retrieve him.
FDR replied to the charges in a very memorable and humorous speech (September 23, 1944).

    'My Dog Fala' Speech:
'These Republican leaders have not been content with attacks on me, or my wife, or on my sons. No, not content with that, they now include my little dog, Fala. Well, of course, I don't resent attacks, and my family doesn't resent attacks—but Fala does resent them. You know, Fala is Scotch, and being a Scottie, as soon as he learned that the Republican fiction writers in Congress and out had concocted a story that I had left him behind on the Aleutian Islands and had sent a destroyer back to find him—at a cost to the taxpayers of two or three, or eight or 20 million dollars—his Scotch soul was furious. He has not been the same dog since! I am accustomed to hearing malicious falsehoods about myself--such as that old, worm-eaten chestnut that I have represented myself as indispensable. But I think I have a right to resent, to object to libelous statements about my dog.'
