He was drafted into the German army in 1941.
Werner was married twice and divorced both of his wives.
He had to have casts of his hands made to be imprinted into the wet cement at Mann's Theater. Supposedly, he did not want to put his actual hands in wet cement.
He resembled Dennis Hopper.

He once said: 'I'm married to the theater, but my mistress is the films.'
Werner was an anti-Nazi and a pacifist.
His service in the German army lasted only two weeks, he pretended to be 'stupid' and failed to pass the German recruiting officer's requirements for entry into the army.
He was nominated for three Golden Globes and won Best Actor In A Supporting Role for the film 'The Spy Who Came In From the Cold (1965).'
He died two days after François Truffaut, the director of Werner's two most famous films, 'Jules and Jim' and 'Fahrenheit 451.'
He died of a massive heart attack.
