Crime Fighter
    (1988- )
    Resident of Dallas
    Former Police officer
Shot and killed neighbor, Botham Jean, after parking on the wrong floor and mistaking him for a burglar upon entering the apartment (September 6, 2018)
Found guilty of murder in a jury trial (Oct. 1, 2019)
She was involved in an unrelated shooting of an unarmed man during a traffic stop in 2017.
She was distracted by sexual texts (sexting) from her boyfriend at the time of the encounter with Jean.
She claimed to have mistaken Jean for a burglar upon entering the apartment (he was eating ice cream while watching television...)
She made an attempt to invoke the Stand Your Ground law as a defense for her actions (or to secure a lesser manslaughter charge), but the jury rejected it.
After her guilty verdict, she received hugs from the presiding judge and Jean's brother, setting off a public debate over the appropriateness of the hugs.
She was the only woman serving on an elite critical response team within the Dallas Police force.
She had only been living at the apartment complex for a month at the time of the incident (honest mistake?)
She cried emotionally both after shooting Jean and then during the trial.
She was ruled as justified in the 2017 shooting, in which the assailant reportedly attempted to grab her taser while resisting arrest.
