    He was first choice for the role of the King in the original 1951 Broadway production of 'The King and I,' but turned it down.
    He appeared in only three movies.
    He created the roles of Curly in 'Oklahoma' and Fred Graham/Petruchio in 'Kiss Me Kate.'
    He won a Tony Award for 'Kismet.'
    The Brooklyn College Theater Department presents an annual award named after him.
