He crowned himself emperor in a ceremony that used a fourth of the nation's annual revenue (1977).
He ordered the massacre of more than a hundred schoolchildren who refused to buy expensive uniforms from a factory owned by his wife (1979).
He personally took part in torturing his opponents.
He was accused of cannibalism.
He briefly converted to Islam as a ploy to get financial aid from Libya.
He had 17 wives and 50 children.
He was released from prison during a general amnesty (1993) and died a free man.
Why he might not be annoying
He was orphaned at age 6 when his father was beaten to death by a French bureaucrat and his mother committed suicide.
He served with the Free French during World War II.
He won the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre.
