    (March 12, 1925-August 15, 2012)
    Born in Stamford, Connecticut
    Science fiction author
Best-known for his 'Stainless Steel Rat' series of novels and short stories
Also wrote the 'Bill the Galactic Hero' and 'Deathworld' novels
Received the Damon Knight Memorial Award in 2009
    Resident of Ireland
    Namesake of the Harrison Award
Birth name was Henry Maxwell Dempsey
He promoted the invented language of Esperanto.
He was a pacifist who loathed the military and called Vietnam 'America's greatest sin,' but, refused to criticize Communism and lived in countries protected by the American military.
His 'Stainless Steel Rat' stories, about a futuristic con man turned lawman (think 'It Takes a Thief'), are really detective stories with a thin sci-fi veneer.
An atheist, he used his writings to slam believers, but only Christians.
His novel 'Make Room! Make Room!,' which inspired the movie 'Soylent Green,' and an episode of the tv series 'Perversions of Science,' are his only works to be filmed.
He worked with close friend and fellow sci-fi author Brian Aldiss to edit several superb sci-fi anthologies.
One of the best-selling series in sci-fi history, the 'Stainless Steel Rat' books outsold his other works by almost 2 to 1.
He was very well traveled and used his experiences in his writings: languages, place names, anthropological observances.
He started out as an illustrator for comic books and comic strips.
Before being widowed, he was married almost fifty years.
    He served honorably in WWII.
His appeal was international, with some of his books having not even been published in English.
