Known in the U.K. as the Detroit Spinners
Wynne died of a heart attack on stage at age 43 (July 14, 1984)
They changed their name in 1961 to The Spinners, deriving it from the hubcaps of one of the member's 1951 Ford Crown Victoria.
Motown was less than enthused by them and used them more often as road managers, shipping clerks and chauffeurs for their other groups than as recording artists.
Between 1961-71 they went through three lead singer changes.
Wynne, lead singer for their biggest hits, left in 1977 to pursue a solo career.
They allowed Eddie Steeples to bop his way through their song 'The Rubberband Man' for an OfficeMax TV commercial.
When they left Motown in 1971 Aretha Franklin suggested they sign with her label, Atlantic.
Coupled with hiring Wynne as the new lead singer, the hits started happening.
'I'll Be Around' was a record B-side until radio stations convinced them it was the better song than the A-side.
They were right as 'I'll Be Around' hit #3 on Billboards Singles chart.
Though Dionne Warwick didn't think 'Then Came You' was that great, they did, and it became the first #1 song for either of them.
They released their box set in 2003 to much fanfare and were hailed as important artists by rock luminaries and admirers David Bowie and Elvis Costello.
