Military Personnel
    (September 22, 1882-October 16, 1946)
    Born in Helmscherode, Germany
    Field Marshall
Head of the High Command of the Armed Forces (1939-45)
Convicted of war crimes at the Nuremburg Trial and executed
His deferrence to Hitler led colleagues to call him 'Lakeitel' ('Little Lackey') and 'the nodding donkey.'
He signed the Commisar Order that any 'bolshevized' Soviets taken prisoner would be shot.
He ordered that French pilots from the Normandie-Niemen squadron be executed rather than made POWs.
He wrote, 'It is not only justified, but it is the duty of the troops to use all means without restriction, even against women and children, as long as it ensures success.'
Nuremburg prosecutor Robert Jackson called him a 'weak and willing tool.'
Before giving in, he advised Hitler against the invasions of France and Russia.
His request to be executed by a firing squad was rejected.
He said, 'It is tragic... that I did not see there is a limit set even for a soldier's performance to his duty. That is my fate.'
