His rank as General in the Confederate forces was likely due to his friendship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Why he might not be annoying
He graduated 8th from the U.S Military Academy.
His wife died young.
He was considered by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to be the finest general in the Confederacy.
During his dual with General Felix Huston he refused to fire, resulting in his being shot in the thigh.
When at the Battle of Shiloh, he was fatally shot in an artery at the back of his knee, he sent his physician away to see to other wounded men thinking it a trivial wound.
