    Born in Trinidad and Tobago
    Family moved to Suriname when he was nine months old
    Won a gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the Seoul Olympics (1988)
    Won a bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the Barcelona Olympics (1992)
    Won three NCAA titles in 100-meter butterfly (1990-92), one in 200-meter butterfly (1990) and one as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team (1991)
    Assistant swimming coach at the University of Florida

Why he might be annoying:

    Although he competed for Suriname, he trained in Florida.
    The reaction in Suriname to his gold medal was rather over the top, with one sports writer joking that they were running out of things to name after him.
    He was so disappointed at not defending his Olympic title that he cried on the podium while accepting his bronze medal.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was the first athlete from Suriname to win an Olympic gold medal.
    He was the first black athlete to win a gold medal in swimming.
    He won a year after Al Campanis said that blacks 'don't have the buoyancy' to be successful swimmers.
    The Florida Gators' head coach said he was 'one of the few [swimmers] who is considered both a great athlete and a great coach.'
