    British actress best known for her role as Ursula Brangwen in the 1969 Ken Russell film 'Women in Love' (see pic)
    Also acted in 'Nightmare (1964),' 'Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965),' 'A Severed Head (1970),' 'Old Drac (1975),' 'Hedda (1976)' and 'Valentino (1977)'
    TV series include 'ITV Play of the Week' (1963-64), 'The Saint' (1965-66), 'Jackanory' (1971), 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' (1976), 'Lillie' (1978), 'Play for Today' (1979-80), 'The Home Front' (1983), 'The Practice' (1986)' and 'Chancer' (1991)
    Her parents were less than encouraging with her acting career - in the 1950s her mother stated when she was introduced to anyone, 'She says she wants to be an actress. And we hope that will die a natural death.'
    Her promising film career never took flight.
    She auditioned for 'The Lion in Winter (1968)' and was turned away, and the lead in 'The Go-Between (1970),' which went to Julie Christie.
    She initially turned down the role for 'Women in Love' as she had just given birth to her only child and wanted to immerse herself in motherhood.
    She turned down the role of Amy in Sam Peckinpah's 1971 film 'Straw Dogs' (it went to Susan George).
    She keeps black-and-white film stills documenting her film career in her downstairs toilet.
    She is a vegetarian.
    She began at the Central School of Speech and Drama on a scholarship at age 17 because her ambition drew her away from becoming 'just a secretary.'
    Sci-fi geeks love the fact that she acted in the first Doctor Who movie.
    She had nude scenes in 'Women in Love.'
    She stated of the movie - 'Glenda [Jackson, her co-star] was pregnant and I had just had a baby so we were both very pleased with our bosoms because we felt we needed them for a movie like that.'
    In 1987 she started a second career as a reflexologist.
    She was married to the same man for well over 50 years.
