The Resume

    (1962-1965)
Ray Hildebrand (December 21, 1940-August 18, 2023), born in Joshua, Texas
Jill Jackson (May 20, 1942- ), born in McCamey, Texas
Recorded the singles ‘Hey Paula’ (1963) and ‘Young Lovers’ (1963)

Why they might be annoying:

They originally released their records as Ray and Jill; when Mercury Records picked up their single for national distribution, the president insisted that they change their name, arguing that having a Ray and Jill singing ‘Hey, hey Paula’ and ‘Hey, hey Paul’ to each other made no sense.
They were not romantically involved, but their record label asked them to act like sweethearts to promote their singles.
Hildebrand decided to quit showbiz in the middle of a Dick Clark Caravan of Stars tour, forcing Clark to fill in as a substitute ‘Paul’ for several shows.

Why they might not be annoying:

They were students at Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas, when a local DJ asked listeners to stop by the station and perform for an American Cancer Society fundraiser. The duo performed a song Hildebrand had written and were encouraged to make a record of it.
’Hey Paula’ hit #1 and sold over two million singles.
During a tour of Britain, they bumped an upcoming group called the Beatles from the TV show ‘Pop Inn.’ (The Fab Four apparently didn’t mind, since they asked Ray and Jill for their autographs after the show.)
In ‘Animal House,’ Boon (Peter Riegert) and Katy (Karen Allen) sing ‘Hey Paula’ to each other while high.
