Why he might be annoying:

Though a Catholic, he was very brash and vulgar.
He had greasy hair.
He refused an NCAA tournament invitation since he didn't like where Marquette had to play (1970).
He retired from coaching and entered broadcasting before he turned 50.
After broadcasting one buzzer-beater, he kept yelling 'Holy mackerel! Holy mackerel!'
After a team won a regional final, he would join the team in goofy dancing on the court.
He was terrible in remembering names.

Why he might not be annoying:

He led Marquette to the 1977 NCAA title in his last game as coach.
He was part of a legendary NBC college basketball broadcasting team in the late 1970's (along with Dick Enberg and Billy Packer).
Unlike Packer, he always believed in the small schools and Cinderellas when doing commentary.
He was known for his interesting way of words.
He was not afraid to recruit in the inner cities.
His brother, Dick, and he are the first brothers enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
He died of leukemia.
