The Resume

Why they might be annoying:

They played their home games in Landover, Maryland for 23 years, before actually moving into the District.
They posted a pitiful 8-67-5 record in their inaugural season (1974-75).
They were a laughingstock franchise in the 1970's, with attendance issues bad enough that the team was a target of relocation and contraction rumors altogether.
They retired Yvon Labre's #7, despite the fact he never posted impressive on-ice statistics or won an individual award with the team.
They had a reputation for three decades of having a team that posted solid regular season records, but always came up short in the playoffs.
They lost seven consecutive playoff series matchups to the Pittsburgh Penguins between 1995 and 2018.
They were swept by the Detroit Red Wings in their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals (1998).
They were suspected of tanking the 2003-04 season after they traded away all their high priced talent for draft picks and prospects in an attempt to secure the first overall pick.
They wasted away Alexander Ovechkin's first decade with the team with short playoff runs.
They didn't win their first Stanley Cup title until their 44th season.

Why they might not be annoying:

They have a strong following in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
They were founded by Washington Bullets owner Abe Pollin, who was looking for a secondary tenant to fill dates for the Capital Center.
They were the NHL's southernmost (east coast) franchise between 1980 and 1992.
They became a respectable franchise following the hirings of David Poile as general manager and Bryan Murray as head coach.
Their on-ice fortunes changed for the better following the acquisition of Rod Langway.
Their 1987 'Easter Epic' playoff game against the New York Islanders is regarded as one of the NHL's classic overtime games.
Their 1998 playoff run was regarded as the franchise's breakthrough as they were able to win the Prince of Wales Trophy and reach the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time.
Their franchise fortunes changed for the better following the drafting of Alexander Ovechkin in 2004.
Alexander Ovechkin captained the franchise to their first Stanley Cup championship (2018).
