Why they might be annoying
The lyrics to 'If' are pretty goofy: 'If a picture paints a thousand words/Then why can't I paint you?'
Their songs were almost always laid-back soft rock ballads.
They broke up in 1973 when Gates and Griffin had a dispute over songwriting duties.
They regrouped in 1976, but the reunion was short-lived.
Why they might not be annoying
Their songs were all over the radio in the 1970s.
David Gates, the band's songwriter, also wrote the hit 'Popsicles and Icicles' for the Murmaids.
They are the most critically respected of the early 1970s soft rock artists.
David Gates now runs a ranch in California.
