    While serving as a sharpshooter in World War I, he was taken prisoner but escaped.
    He was Italy's first Tour de France winner.
    His death was attributed to Fascists angry with his Socialist political leanings.
    The brand of bike bearing his name is one of the most successful in Europe.
    Greg Lemond won 1989's Tour de France riding a Bottecchia bike.
