World Leader
    (August 13, 1913-August 3, 1977)
    Born in Panayia, Cyprus
Birth name was Michail Christodolou Mouskos
Archbishop of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus (1950-77)
First President of Cyprus (1960-July, 1974; December, 1974-1977)
He appeared to condone, if not encourage, sabotage and violence against British colonial forces in Cyprus.
He ignored the Supreme Constitutional Court of Cyprus when it ruled he could not unilaterally add 13 amendments to the Constitution that removed safeguards for the Turkish minority (1963).
The Greek and Turkish Cypriot populations increasingly segregated into two hostile camps during his reign.
His funeral was interrupted by an unseasonal rainstorm, prompting Turkish Cypriots to cite the proverb, 'When an evil man is buried, the heavens open to wash away his misdeeds.'
He survived four assassination attempts while in office.
When he refused to unite Cyprus with Greece, the Greek military junta organized a coup to overthrow him (July 15, 1974).
The coup backfired on the junta, as Turkey used it as grounds for occupying the northern third of Cyprus, triggering the junta's collapse and the restoration of democracy in Greece.
Journalist Oriana Fallaci said he was one of the few heads of state with both brains and courage.
His funeral was interrupted by an unseasonal rainstorm, prompting Greek Cypriots to cite the proverb, 'When a good man is buried, even the heavens shed tears.'
