Author
    (August 16, 1884-August 19, 1967)
    Born in Luxembourg
    Birth name was Hugo Gernsbacher
    Wrote the sci-fi novel 'Ralph 124C 41+' (1911)
Published and edited the sci-fi magazines 'Amazing Stories' and 'Wonder Stories'
Published and edited the science magazines 'Modern Electrics' and 'The Electrical Experimenter'
Member of the first group of inductees into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame (1996)
He coined the word 'scientifiction' for the genre, but it lost out to the easier to pronounce 'science fiction.'
His own writing does not hold up well as literature.
    H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard stopped contributing to his magazines because of his low royalties (a quarter of a cent per word) and tardiness in paying up.
Lovecraft called him 'Hugo the Rat.'
He was a pioneer in amateur radio and experimental television and founded the radio station WRNY.
He was an inventor with over 80 patents to his name.
He used his sci-fi magazines to debunk astrology and quack medical devices.
He is the namesake for one of the leading sci-fi awards, the Hugo.
