    He was divorced.
    His birth date is somewhat of a mystery. His son claims his birth date was 1864, however other sources claim it is 1865, 1890, or 1870.
    He liked to make up stories about his personal life, claiming to have grown up with a Sioux tribe in the west.
    He starred in most of the films he directed.
    His career began to fade in the late twenties.
    He was the model for the Uncle Sam WW I poster.
    He brought movies onto another level by creating the still popular 'Anti hero' theme.
    His films captured the west in its intense realism.
    He appeared in the stage versions of 'Ben Hur' and 'The Virginian' and encouraged Francis X. Bushman to take the role of Messala in 'Ben Hur: A Tale of Christ (1925),' saying it was 'the best goddamned part in the picture.'
    His nickname was 'Two Gun Bill.'
    His film, 'Tumbleweeds (1925),' is regarded as one of the greatest western films of all time.
    He donated his estate to Los Angeles, California on the condition that it is used only for art. Today, the West Coast branch of the Actors Studio stands there.
    He was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 1975.
    He has a star on the walk of fame.
