Artist
    (April 25, 1775-December 19, 1851)
    Born in Cambridge, United Kingdom
Birth name is Joseph Mallord William Turner
Painted 'The Sun Rising Through Vapor,' 'The Battle of Trafalgar,' 'Eruption of Vesuvius,' 'Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus,' 'The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons,' 'The Fighting Temeraire' and 'Rain, Steam and Light'
He favored catastrophic subjects such as shipwrecks.
He went to watch the burning of the British parliament so he could paint it.
He fathered two daughters out of wedlock.
He became increasingly reclusive and eccentric as he aged.
Britain's Turner Prize, founded in 1984, is often controversial.
    His mother was institutionalized.
He was admitted to the Royal Academy at age 14 and had his own studio by age 18.
His light-filled paintings prefigured French impressionism.
He left his work to the British public.
'The Fighting Temeraire' was voted Britain's best painting in a BBC poll (2005).
