His children's books are written in a deliberately fussy, pseudo-Victorian style.

He doesn't dumb down his books for kids.
He has a dry, nasty sense of humor.
Unlike some children's authors, he takes the time to talk and joke around with every single child who comes to his signings.
He organized a fund raiser to pay the legal costs of a bookstore that refused to reveal its customers' buying habits to police (2002).
Besides writing children books, he also writes very dark novels for adults.
