Conductor
    (April 30, 1916-January 25, 1999)
    Born in Red Bluff, California
Founded the Robert Shaw Chorale (1949)
Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (1967-88)
    Kennedy Center Honoree (1991)
Received the National Medal of the Arts (1992)
Inaugural member of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame (1998)
His first marriage broke up over his drinking and womanizing while on tour.
He would launch into profanity-laden tirades during rehearsals.
He sweated so profusely that the pages of his scores became wrinkled from perspiration and he would have to shower and change suits during concert intermissions.
After he conducted the chorus of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony for the NBC Symphony Orchestra, Arturo Toscanini declared, 'I have at last found the maestro I was looking for.'
He said he was drawn to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra because he wanted to work in a city associated with moral giants such as Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
He won 14 Grammys and the first Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to a conductor.
