Why they might be annoying:

They copped the name of baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates.
The team was owned by a lawyer, James F. Callahan
The team was in constant decline. Other than their third season, every season they finished worse than the year before.
Their worst finish was their last one, winning only four games as the Philadelphia Quakers.
They only won one playoff game in their entire history.
Their arena, Duquesne Gardens only sat 5,000.
The depression forced the Pirates to move to Philadelphia with a promise to return when a new arena could be built.
After a season in Philadelphia, they suspended operations. For five seasons after that, the NHL Governors approved the right for them to return when they were able.

Why they might not be annoying:

In their first year of play, they finished as the top U.S. club, and third overall of the seven NHL teams.
They are credited with originating changing players on the fly. Meaning that a player would come off while play was live and be replaced by a fresh skater.
Rather than the NHL norm of replacing individual players when they were tired, they originated replacing all three forwards at the same time.
They signed the highest salaried hockey player, Lionel Conacher, at $7,500 per year.
They won their first game, beating the Boston Bruins in Boston, 2-1 (November 26, 1925).
They beat Montreal Canadien goalie George Venzina (Vezina Cup namesake) in his last game, 1-0 (November 28, 1925).
Boxer Benny Leonard bought the team (1928).
