World Leader
    (October 30, 1873-February 18, 1913)
Born in Parras de la Fuente, Mexico
Leader in the Mexican Revolution against President Porfirio Diaz (1910-11)
    President of Mexico (November 6, 1911-February 18, 1913)
Forced out of office in a coup by Victoriano Huerta
Shot to death four days later
He claimed to be a medium and that the spirit of Benito Juarez guided him in his actions against Diaz.
He urged the revolutionaries to implement a ceasefire and strike a deal with Diaz; Pancho Villa ignored him and won a decisive victory that forced Diaz to resign.
As president, his attempts at following a moderate policy failed to win over the defeated conservatives while alienating radicals like Emiliano Zapata.
He put Victoriano Huerta in charge of the armed forces in Mexico City even though Huerta openly talked about overthrowing him as president.
He sold much of his property to finance the campaign against Diaz.
He was nicknamed 'the Apostle of Democracy.'
He refused to bring back press censorship when newspapers started criticizing his performance as president.
The US ambassador blatantly interfered in Mexican politics to get him deposed.
Huerta promised him safe passage to exile in the US, then had him murdered.
