    His skills declined sharply in his last seasons as he underwent repeated knee surgeries.
    He fell one vote short of being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee (2014).
    He has been married to Gordette du Bois for over 50 years.
    He was the first Major Leaguer to win batting titles in his first two full seasons.
