Why he might be annoying
During a gas station robbery, he and two accomplices stabbed 17-year-old Joseph Fournier 19 times and left him to bleed to death in a garbage can (October 26, 1974).
Despite having been sentenced to life without parole, he was allowed to leave jail as part of a weekend furlough program.
While on furlough, he fled the state (June 6, 1986).
In Maryland, he twice raped a woman after pistol whipping, stabbing, binding and gagging her fiancé (April 3, 1987).
He became synonymous with negative campaigning.
Lee Atwater said, 'By the time this election is over, Willie Horton will be a household name.'
Why he might not be annoying
A spokesman for Governor Michael Dukakis pointed out, 'Don't forget that Mr. Horton had nine previous successful furloughs.'
The furor over his escape prompted the Massachusetts legislature to end furloughs for prisoners serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
The judge who sentenced him in Maryland refused to return him to Massachusetts, saying, 'I'm not prepared to take the chance that Mr. Horton might again be furloughed or otherwise released.'
