Why he might be annoying:

A lot of his poetry, especially that dealing with the Confederacy, is quite actually a downer.
Unlike most priests who don't move around a lot during their careers, Ryan moved around a great deal, moving back and forth from the North and South.
His poetry has received little critical notice and is almost forgotten today.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a chaplain for the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
He began writing poetry to deal with his brother's death fighting for the South.
His poetry, especially 'The Conquered Banner' was greatly uplifting for the Southern people who had just lost a devastating war and were experiencing the brutality of Reconstruction.
His poetry was popular not only in the South, but among Catholics from the North as well.
He has a high school in Nashville, Tennessee named after him.
'A Crown for Our Queen' was a collection of poems about the Blessed Virgin Mary.
