Why he might be annoying:

He married Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald of France, when she was twelve years old.
Additionally, he was still married to his first wife, Osburh, at the time.
He broke the law by crowning his wife as the Queen.
He returned to England after his French visit to find his oldest son Aethelstan dead and his other son Aethelbald in charge.
He was hated by the people and by the Church, who had switched their loyalty to Aethelbald while he was away.
He was deposed by his own son.
His fall was ultimately his own fault (were he at home in England rather than off on pilgrimages, he would have been able to stop his son's plot).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was deeply religious and gave generously to charity and to the Church.
His wife Judith was the first Queen of England.
More Danish casualties in battle occurred under his rule than any previous king.
He worked valiantly to rebuild England after the Danish raids.
He rebuilt the Saxon school after it was burned down.
He gave most of England to Aethelbald rather than fight a civil war.
