    Personal secretary to Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels (1942-45)
    After World War II, worked as a secretary for state radio stations in West Berlin and Munich
    Interviewed in the documentary ‘A German Life’ (2016)
    She joined the Nazi Party.
    Her duties at the Propaganda Ministry included falsifying casualty reports to cover up German losses.
    She said about Goebbels, ‘There was really nothing to criticize about him.’
    She said about Hitler’s suicide, ‘It felt as if something inside me had died.’
    She claimed to be unaware of the Holocaust, despite having witnessed roundups in the streets and having Jewish colleagues who disappeared.
    Later in life, she would refer to the Holocaust as ‘the matter of the Jews.’
    She said, ‘God doesn’t exist, but the devil certainly does.’
    She and her siblings were ‘spanked with a carpet beater’ by their father when they were disobedient.
    Two of her brothers were killed in battle during World War II,
    When her apartment was destroyed in a bombing raid, Goebbels’ wife Magda gave her a blue woolen suit with a silk lining. (‘I’ve never possessed anything as chic as that before or since.’)
    After the war, she was imprisoned by the Soviets for five years.
    Face it, she was probably right when she declared, ‘Those people nowadays who say they would have stood up against the Nazis – I believe they are sincere in meaning that, but believe me, most of them wouldn’t have.’
