The Resume

    (April 4, 1949-October 17, 1990)
    Born in Manhattan, New York
Was engaged to Janis Joplin at the time of her death
Served 30 months in prison for armed robbery (1977-80)
    Wrote the novel ‘Homeboy’ (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

He was expelled from three private schools.
He met Janis Joplin while delivering cocaine to her home.
He openly admitted he was attracted to Joplin only because of her fame: ‘If she was any old body, I wouldn’t have looked at her.’
He married his first wife to keep her from suing him after a motorcycle accident that left her face partially paralyzed.
He pimped out his second wife, a waitress named Laura, to get money to buy heroin.
He then committed a series of armed robberies, frequently targeting tourists arriving at the San Francisco airport, who he would offer a ride into the city, then rob them en route.
In New Orleans, he was arrested for DUI twice in six months, the second time after colliding with the police van used to pick up drunk drivers (1986).
During his book tour, he played the role of literary bad boy to the hilt, such as showing up for interviews wearing tank tops to show off his tattoos.
He killed himself and his girlfriend when he drove his motorcycle into a bridge piling.
An autopsy revealed that his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit and he had cocaine and Percodan in his system.

Why he might not be annoying:

His mother was ‘an alcoholic beauty who drank herself to death.’
Terence Hallinan, an attorney for his wife Laura, said, ‘You couldn’t help but like him, even when he was robbing you.’
He took lierature classes in jail and won the PEN American Prisoners’ Writing Contest.
He said that at one point he was planning to drink himself to death ‘but something awoke in me and I wrote a book instead.’
His novel was critically praised, drawing comments like ‘a cross between Tom Wolfe and Henry Miller.’
