Native American Icon

The Resume

    (1831-December 15, 1890)
    Birth name was Tatanka Iyotaka
    Leader of the Hunkpapa Sioux
Inspired the Battle of Little Bighorn
Toured with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show
Killed by soldiers attempting to arrest him

Why he might be annoying:

He convinced the tribal leaders to kill Custer and his men at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
After that, he fled to Canada with his people.
He returned after his tribe almost starved to death.
Traveling with Buffalo Bill, he would curse out the audience in his native Lakota language to wild applause.
He looks pissed off in most of his pictures.
He left Buffalo Bill Cody's show after only four months because he despised white culture.
He starting practicing the mystical Ghost Dance, which he thought would drive the whites from his people's land.
Instead, this was perceived as a threat by the American government and they sent troops to arrest him.
He and his son Crow Foot were killed in the ensuing battle (December 15, 1890).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a master of sarcasm.
He was known to go hungry and give up his food for others.
    He was a family man.
Most who had met him have spoke very highly of his character.
He was murdered by his own people, who were part of the soldiers that had attempted to arrest him.
He defended himself, saying, 'Is it wrong for me to love my own? Is it wicked for me because my skin is red? Because I am Sioux? Because I was born where my father lived? Because I would die for my people and my country? God made me an Indian.'
He resisted any further land cessation to the United States government and refused to move for white settlers.
The press routinely dragged his name through the mud, even though he usually had done nothing wrong.
He was a victim of Manifest Destiny.
He was arrested for practicing his faith.
He shook hands with President Grover Cleveland at the White House.
He fought for what he believed in.
He was one of the last great Indian chiefs.
He is considered the most recognizable Native American in the world.
