When his career began to falter, Greta attempted to help him by giving him the lead role opposite her in 'Queen Christina (1933).'
The character Norman Maine in 'A Star is Born (1937)' is said to have been based on him.
He is pictured on one of ten 29¢ US commemorative postage stamps honoring stars of the silent screen.
He suffered a fatal heart attack and died (January 9, 1936) He was slated to appear as one of the leads in 'Garden of Allah (1936)' but he died before filming could begin.
