    The character Norman Maine in 'A Star is Born (1937)' is said to have been based on him.
    He is pictured on one of ten 29¢ US commemorative postage stamps honoring stars of the silent screen.
    He suffered a fatal heart attack and died (January 9, 1936) He was slated to appear as one of the leads in 'Garden of Allah (1936)' but he died before filming could begin.
