Military Personnel
    (April 23, 1861-May 14, 1936)
Born in Brackenhurst, England, United Kingdom
    British field marshal
Commanded the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) during World War I
High Commissioner of Egypt and the Sudan (1919-25)
    Named 1st Viscount Allenby (1919)
He failed the entry exam for the Indian civil service twice.
He was a strict disciplinarian and martinet.
The men serving under him nicknamed him 'The Bloody Bull.'
He was sent to the Middle East theater largely because of his constant feuding with Field Marshal Douglas Haig.
He reportedly predicted that people would have to visit a war museum to learn about him but T.E. Lawrence would become a household name.
His son died in an artillery bombardment on the Western front.
The soldiers of the EEF tolerated his strictness and rigidity because he inspired confidence, unlike his predecessor.
He won his battles with far less bloodshed than other WWI commanders.
His coordinated use of mobile infantry, cavalry and aircraft was a precursor to the blitzkrieg tactics of World War II.
