    Father of John, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore
    He scandalized his family by abandoning law for acting.
    He had several affairs with his leading ladies.
    He remarried exactly one year after the death of his first wife.
    He was patriarch of one of the greatest acting dynasties.
    He was amateur middleweight boxing champion of England (1872).
    He was shot by intoxicated railroad engineer Jim Currie, who was found not guilty of assault thanks to the influence of Currie's brother, the mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana.
    As he was being laid to rest, the straps supporting his coffin became twisted and the coffin had to be raised again. As it reappeared, Lionel whispered to John, 'How like father -- a curtain call.'
