His views on Marxism, fascism, homosexuality and atheism were seen as being controversial in his native Italy.
He would frequently cast inexperienced actors.
He fought as part of the Italian Army during World War II.
Many believe that the reason given for his death (stabbed and run over by a youth after making sexual advances towards him), was a cover up for being assassinated for political reasons.
His film, 'Saló o le 120 giornate di Sodoma,' aka '120 Days of Sodom,' has been referred to as one of the most shocking and disturbing horror films ever.
