Why he might be annoying:

He betrayed the Nationalist Chinese.
When the Korean War began, he had just come off 2 years of sick leave and was not as ready for his command as he should have been.
He was a communist.
Despite his huge place in China's military history, he is mostly unknown to the West.

Why he might not be annoying:

For the most part, he was not associated with China's human rights abuses.
He was said to be kind and modest.
He supported the replacement of hard line Maoists with moderates.
