Portrayed neighbor Willard Jarvis on 'The Doris Day Show' (1970 - 73)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a hypochondriac.
He was typecast as prissy, effeminate fussbudgets.
Case in point, his catchphrase uttered in his second banana movie roles was 'Never touch. NEVER touch!'
He appeared on TV commercials in a 'Mrs. Murgatroyd' old lady drag routine.
When he pulled out of the role of Madam Lucy for 'Irene' on Broadway he was replaced by George S. Irving who won a Tony.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was close friends with Doris Day.
He served in the Navy during World War II but was discharged for medical reasons.
He was known for giving great comedic performances even when the written material was sub-par.
He had to drop out of 'Irene' during early stages of rehearsal after learning of his cancer diagnosis.
He recorded a vocal track for the cast album of 'Free to Be... You and Me' with Marlo Thomas.
He reprised the performance for the ABC Animated special the following year. aired on March 11, 1974, six days after his death.
He paved the way for the likes of flamboyant cutups like Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde.
Of course, now he's best known to generations as the woobie magician who tries to steal Frosty the Snowman's magic Hat ('Think Nasty! Think NASTY!' 'Mess-y, mess-y MESS-Y!').
