Why he might be annoying:

He's probably stuck around too long.
Although he broke the record for wins by a head coach, he shortly gave the record up to Bobby Bowden.
He agreed to coach the New England Patriots, but later changed his mind (1973).
He often whines about the referees.
He has a high-pitched voice.
Penn State fired him after news broke that one of his former coaches, Jerry Sandusky, had been accused of having sexual relations with several young boys (November 9, 2011).

Why he might not be annoying:

He's a football icon.
He's been at Penn State since 1950.
He was the one that initially broke Bear Bryant's record.
Unlike Bowden, Paterno puts academics above football, which maybe the reason he's had problems winning recently.
He was the consensus National champion 4 times, went undefeated 4 times, and won Coach of the Year twice.
He turned down much more money from NFL teams to stay at Penn State.
He gives back to the university in donations.
He won his 400th game at Penn State (November 6, 2010).
