Why he might be annoying:

In one of his early roles, he was miscredited as R.K. Armstrong.
He was married three times and divorced twice.
For his many appearances in Sam Peckinpah films, he was typecast as a psychotic preacher, wielding a Bible in one hand and a shotgun in the other.
He said about his relationship with Peckinpah, 'I think Sam and I had a kinship because we both felt like aliens in this world. We didn't know how to relate to people.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He studied at the famed Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg.
His acting for Peckinpah drew on his conflicted feelings over rejecting his fundamentalist parents' desire that he become a pastor.
Although often cast as gruff or violent characters, he was friendly and approachable in real life.
He retired from acting in his mid-80s because of near blindness.
