Why he might be annoying:

He enrolled at Amherst University on a partial athletic scholarship but became a waiter for extra cash.
He grades were unremarkable his first two years at Amherst.
He was driving to a conference with three other doctors when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed.
Urban legend has the hospital in North Carolina refusing to admit him or not giving him the best of care due to his race, but the other doctors in the car, all with minor injuries, rebuked the claim and insisted they all got the best possible treatment.

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned a doctorate degree in just two years.
His doctoral thesis title 'Banked Blood,' demonstrating ways to store blood 'long-term' without fear of contamination, was a medical breakthrough.
His method was first used on the front lines during World War II for wounded British soldiers and saved countless lives.
In 1941 he was named director of the U.S. Red Cross Blood Bank, but resigned in protest after nine months due to the Armed Forces policy of separating blood by race, stating it 'lacked scientific foundation.'
