Why he might be annoying
He ran a very unpopular government.
He seized power after a popular revolt against the fradulent election of Moshood Kashimawo Olawole Abiola (June 12, 1993)
He consolidated his power by purging the military and placing restrictions on political activity.
He executed Ken Saro-Wiwa and many other non-violent environmentalists.
His regime had numerous human rights abuses.
He jailed the winner of the 1993 elections and invalidated the results.
He surrounded himself with people who portrayed him as the man that was destined to unite the diverse nation of Nigeria.
He united them only in hatred of his regime.
He looted at least $4 billion in assets from Nigeria which his family claims was legitimately acquired.
His widow hired Johnny Cochren to defend her against embezzlement charges.
Nigeria was suspended from the British Commonwealth and was diplomatically isolated because of his dictatorship.
Why he might not be annoying
He spearheaded military intervention that restored Sierra Leone to civilian rule (1998).
He died of a heart attack at 53 while having sex with three Indian prostitutes.
